Project Title	FEATURE EXTRACTION AND DATA MINING FROM CLIMATE DATA (FAD) About the project:This project is undertaken as part of a larger project of Centre of Artificial Intelligence for Societal Needs. The centre will focus on multidisciplinary research relevant to national development goals in the thematic areas of energy, water, climate, traffic, and disaster management, and use intelligent methods to solve problems in these areas. The objective of this particular project is to explore feature discovery and advanced machine learning paradigms for a range of important climate prediction and modeling tasks, such as rainfall prediction in different locations, local variation in rainfall within a region, predicting cyclone trajectories and studying patterns of eddies over Bay of Bengal. We are interested in working with climate change and its impact on the vulnerable region of Sundarban delta and the city of Kolkata and its neighborhood. The work will involve Identifying features and climate indices for these tasks. We wish to work on statistical downscaling of climate model simulations in order to develop better statistical downscaling models to predict future climate parameters, and also to use the model outputs to predict extreme events related to draughts and floods due to climate change. We wish to work on pattern mining to detect and understand extreme events, anomalous climate events, and analyze changes and trends in climate
